In August 1942 when he participated in the Quit India Movement.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj far right hand over the Liberation War award to Vajpayee's family members.

Awarded with Padma Vibhushan in 1992.

Political Career

Bharatiya Janata Party

In August 1942 he participated in the Quit India Movement.

In 1951 he joined Bharatiya Jana Sangh a newly formed Hindu right-wing political party and was appointed its National Secretary of the northern region.

In 1957 he contested Lok Sabha election from Mathura in Uttar Pradesh and lost to Raja Mahendra Pratap.

In 1957 he was elected to the Lok Sabha for the first time from Balrampur in Uttar Pradesh.

In 1968 he became the National President of Jana Sangh.

From 1975 to 1977 he was arrested along with other leaders during the Internal Emergency imposed by the then Prime Minister of India Indira Gandhi.

In 1977 he became the External Affairs Minister in Morarji Desai's Cabinet.

In 1980 he formed Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) along with his colleagues and became its first National President.

On 16 May 1996 he became the 10th Prime Minister of India.

From 19 March 1998 to 22 May 2004 he again served as the Prime Minister of India.

Some Interesting Facts About Atal Bihari Vajpayee

  1. When he was a teenager, he was jailed for opposing British Colonial rule.
  2. He was a follower of Shyam Prasad Mukherjee, who is the founder of Bhartiya Jan Sangh.
  3. He never got married. Once in an interview, he said - "I stay so busy that I forgot."
  4. Atal Bihari Vajpayee is the only leader to win six Lok Sabha constituencies from four states.
  5. He was the first politician who delivered a speech in Hindi at the UN general assembly.
  6. When he was a PM, a nuclear test named Shakti was conducted at Pokhran in his leadership.
  7. He was also a poet. He wrote his first poem when he was in class 10th. 
  8. Atal Bihari Vajpayee participated in Quit India Movement against the British Government in India.
  9. You will be surprised to know that both Atal Bihari and his father were classmates. The two went to the same Law College together for studying Law and even shared the same room.  
  10. He was a very good orator. When he delivered his maiden speech, Jawaharlal Nehru predicted that he would become the PM of India.
  11.  Atal Bihari Vajpayee became the PM of India three times in 1996, 1998, and 1999 for 13 days, 13 months, and 5 years respectively. 
  12. He traveled by a bus named Sada-e-Sarhad to Lahore to build a strong relationship with Pakistan.
  13. He was a Brahmin, but he loved non-vegetarian foods very much. His favorite dish was prawn. 
  14. He was honored with India’s highest civilian award- Bharat Ratna in March 2015.
