Outdoor enthusiasts and adventurous backpackers who plan to sojourn the forest and wildlife must carry these survival tools to have a safer expedition.
Your survival in the wilderness depends more on your wit and grit rather than the safety tools and equipments you carry along. But it’s still recommended to carry a survival kit packed with a few essentials. Of course, you need food and water but there are lot of other useful tools you need to keep handy to make your trips into the wild easier, safer and more comfortable.
An unforeseen and adverse situation may come at any point of the journey. In fact if you get lost or become injured by any chance, an item like a firestarter or a compass or a signal mirror can turn your fate around and rescue you from abandonment or any other unfortunate situation.
Don’t forget to pack these survival tools for a safe and thrilling forest and wildlife expedition.
A handy saw can be used for freeing a stuck limb between rock and hard place or chopping off tree logs as it’s less likely to cause you an injury, lightweight and precise. A pocket chainsaw is a pretty great tool when you have to cut down big logs of wood for building shelter. It could even be used for splitting the logs down into small pieces of firewood.
A ferro rod is a must-have tool to be kept in the survival kit. Made out of a chunk of ferrocerium metal, it produces sparks when scraped against a surface, mostly knife. You can make fire in the wet forest environments.
Knife, preferably a pocket knife that’s sharp, thick and heavy should be used for splitting wood like a hatchet or machete. A shaper knife like kukri knife can help in cutting rope, cleaning fish, carving spoons and performing other fine works. Blade knives that are fixed are idea for cutting large objects like branches for shelter-building, cutting bandages, creating weapons, creating fire starters. Besides being a forest and wildlife survival tool, it is an essential sea survival tool as well.
Cordage, meaning ropes and cords, are really useful for forest camping especially in a survival situation. Paracords (parachute cords) are lightweight, tough and occupy less space. It’s great for having a tight grip over something like walking sticks and fixed blade knives. But before that make it wet and as soon as it dries, it’ll tighten.
Apart from this, you may also use it in fishing line, building emergency shelter, creating hunting trap, climbing, repairing tent, making splint and hoisting food to keep away from wildlife.
Lighter, tinder and matches can be used for lighting a signal fire, beating the dark and even in keeping you warm. In the moist conditions, it comes to your rescue when nothing else seems to be working.
An axe is a solid choice as it can be sharpened. It is heavy, quick and easy and will help you cut down big chunks of wood.
A small gauge gill net that can be set up and left unattended as you go for your day-to-day survival tasks. The fish swim right into it and end up getting caught. It’s a passive way of yielding food on a daily basis.
If you forget to carry gill net, filament line with hook or fishing line can come in handy when you know your location has plenty of fishes. Moreover, gill net is illegal in certain places and can be used only in emergency survival situations.
When you get stuck somewhere or are lost in the wilderness and can’t make a contact with your people, there are many equipments you can use for signaling. A signal mirror’s flash is visible by aircraft and will catch pilot’s attention. Especially if you flash SOS, pilot would understand that you are in danger. Make sure you read the instructions at the back.
Whistles are very useful and their sound is hard to avoid or miss. When out in the wilderness, blowing whistle might alert campers nearby and you might get a help soon.
Flashlight can be used for signalling as well as seeing in the dark. Not to mention, a compass is undeniably the ultimate navigation tool to guide you through. Moreover, make fire and add green leaves (moisture produces a lot of smoke) to it.
A metal bowl can be used for collecting and purifying water. They are good for cooking wild edibles too. It’s also a handy container for holding the smaller items in your outdoor survival kit.
