6 Places to Visit in Jaisalmer for a Memorable Historical Trip

Jaisalmer desert, nicknamed the “Golden City” of India, is the most beautiful location in the Indian state of Rajasthan. This city is situated 575 km west of the state capital Jaipur. 

Several houses and temples of both the fort and the town below are made of finely carved sandstone. Stationed in the heart of the Thar Desert (also called the Great Indian Desert), Jaisalmer has a population of nearly 78,000.

1. Bada Bagh

Meaning the “Huge or Grand Garden,” Bada Bagh or Barabagh is the memorial place for the nobles of the aristocratic family of Maharawal Jait Singh. It is a garden complex situated nearly 6kms north of Jaisalmer. Established by the Maharajas of the Jaisalmer state from the 18th to 20th century CE, there is a set of regal chhatri cenotaphs that faces a mango grove. 

2. Jaisalmer Fort

Also known as the Golden Fort, Jaisalmer Fort is located on a hill made of yellow sandstone and is crowned by the Jaisalmer Fort. And the mixture of yellow and golden sand gives the fort a magical look. This fort has a magnificent palace and various ornamented Jain temples.

Sam Sand Dunes is one of the most real desert dune sites in entire India. You can see 30-60m tall desert dunes & several tourists enjoy Desert Safari on camels or jeep. It is 45km west of Jaisalmer city.

4. Gadsisar Lake

In 1367, the ruler named Rawal Agdsi Singh excavated and built a phenomenal rainwater lake Gadsisar Lake. Surrounded by small temples, chhatris, and shrines of Amar Sagar, it is worth spending your evening doing boating in the lake.

Earlier, this lake was the primary source of water for Jaisalmer. Because of increased water demand for agriculture, the lake is at risk of drying out.

5. Patwon Ji Ki Haveli

Constructed in the main city by a trader named Guman Chand, Patwon Ji Ki Haweli is among the best places to visit in Jaisalmer. It is famous ever since the first haveli was built in Jaisalmer. A cluster of five havelis, it has exquisite and detailed artwork. It is one of the state’s oldest havelis and continues to retain its beauty over the years.

6. Jain Temples

Jain community enriched and adorned the town of Jaiselmer with beautiful temples, prominently the temples that are dedicated to the 16th Tirthankara ‘Shantinath’ & 23rd Tirthankara ‘Parshvanath.’

A total of seven Jain temples are located inside the Jaisalmer Fort. The biggest of all these Jain temples is the Paraswanath Temple. 

The other Jain temples are namely, Chandraprabhu temple, Rishabdev temple, Shitalnath Temple, Kunthunath Temple & Shantinath Temple. Famous for their exquisite artwork & architecture predominant in the medieval era, these Jain temples are made with yellow sandstone and have elaborate engravings on them.

Besides, the town has one of India’s oldest libraries that comprise rarest of the manuscripts and artifacts of Jain tradition. Various pilgrimage centers are there near the city that includes Lodhruva (Lodarva), Amarsagar, Brahmsar & Pokharan.
