Ex Member of Indian National Congress

Mukherjee's political career started in 1969 when he campaigned in Midnapore by-election of an independent candidate V. K. Krishna Menon. Then Prime Minister of India Mrs Indira Gandhi engaged him to her party "The Indian National Congress". He became the member of the Rajya Sabha in 1969

Pranab was re-elected to the Rajya Sabha in 1975-1981-1993 and 1999

He was Leader of house in the Rajya Sabha from 1980 to 1985

Mukherjee was elected to Lok Sabha 2004 2009 upto July 2012

He was leader of Lok Sabha from 2004 to June 2012

Some Interesting Facts About Pranab Mukherjee

1. Mukherjee was once a professor, apart from being a diplomat. In 1963, he taught Political Science at the Vidyanagar College in West Bengal.

2. With a local Bengali newspaper named Desher Dak, he also worked as a journalist.

3. In 1969 by the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, Mukherjee was introduced to politics. Gandhi guided him to become a member at the Rajya Sabha.

4. The President is popular for his compulsive workaholic nature. According to his daughter Sharmishta, except taking off for his visit to Mirati, his hometown, during the Durga Puja, he works for almost 18 hours a day and hardly takes any leaves.

5. He is one of the most versatile ministers of India. He also became the only minister to handle four major ministries- commerce, defense, finance, and foreign.

6. In 1984, by Euromoney magazine, Mukherjee was voted the Best Finance Minister in the World. He also became the only minister to present seven budgets.

7. Mukherjee quit the Congress and formed his political party, the Rashtriya Samajwadi Party, after the demise of Indira Gandhi.

8. He has kept a diary for the last 40 years. And, following the advice of Mukherjee himself, the writings will be published posthumously.

9. Also, he is the only Finance Minister to serve the post both in the Post-Liberalisation and Pre-Liberalisation eras.

10. Mukherjee has rejected seven mercy petitions including that of Afzal Guru and Ajmal Kasab, after his appointment as the 13th President of India.

11. When he taught school children the political history of India on the occasion of Teacher's Day on September 5, the President made history. At the President's Estate in New Delhi, Mukherjee taught secondary students of a government school.
