The smallest of things can make us anxious. Accepting failures and not trying, overthinking things, canceling plans, ignoring calls and texts, and other situations sometimes take too much toll on us. And we all have our own ways of dealing with the negative thoughts, stress, and anxiety that follows. Some of us reach out for dark chocolate, some of us like to pour our heart out, and some would just feel alright by taking a quick nap. Not limiting to this, there are many other tips, tricks, and techniques that one embraces to reduce stress.
Sound therapy has been used as a means to relieve stress and in recuperation from bad health. Music has been used for centuries to improve one’s physical and mental health. It is considered to be a natural remedy to shut the door of the mind from negativity and self-loathing. When we listen to a song that is pleasant to the ears, our brain releases endorphins and dopamine (feel-good hormones) and brings down the level of cortisol (stress hormone).
According to a Neuroscience study conducted in the UK, neuroscientists have found that there is one song that reduced anxiety at a dramatically high rate of 65%. The team of researchers at Mindlab International led by Dr. David Lewis-Hodgson tested a group of people on anxiety levels while solving a set of challenging puzzles back to back. The researchers assessed the brain activity and physiological states of the participants including breathing rate, heart rate, and blood pressure while they were listening to different songs.
The song “Weightless” by Marconi Union generated a much greater state of relaxation as compared to any other music tested by now. Besides the phenomenal decrease in anxiety, even the normal physiological rates reduced by 35%. Wow.
