In 2014, Anton Mikhailov, Sony’s Computer Entertainment Research and Development Engineer, said that his team is constantly working on Project Morpheus. It was first announced at the 2014 Game Developers Conference. The device was first introduced on 18 March 2014, and the team stated that Project Morpheus was "the next innovation from PlayStation that will [shape] the future of games."

It was in 2015 when the team announced that Project Morpheus was recognized (officially) as PlayStation VR. In 2016, Sony released the device with different prices in different countries.
