But the question arises what the Polar Vertex is? So, let’s learn about it first.
At the end of January, (30th, Wednesday), the United States was hit with some record-breaking cold weather. According to Weather Channel, such parts of the Midwest facing the lowest temperatures is what they've seen in more than two decades. And, this situation is caused by a polar vortex which is also described as a burst of chilling, Arctic air which generally remains locked in the North Pole and surrounding areas.
One report from the NASA stated that usually circular winds keep that air locked nice and tight around the arctic areas and the North Pole, but modifications to that jet stream can beat the balance, leading the cold air to dip south and hit lower regions with bitter and extremely cold weather.
Many people are sharing photos of their experiences living through the extreme cold on their social media handles (Instagram and Twitter).

And, even when the polar vortex is turning the whole country into an ice cube, while Daniel Schetter (also known as “Surfer Dan”) was surfing in Polar Vortex. Yes, you read it right. While many people were passing the end of January wearing 17 layers of clothes in front of their fireplaces, this surfer wasn’t taking a day off. However, for the local legend from Marquette County, Michigan, it was business as usual, and fortunately, photographer Devon Hains was there to capture it.
In an interview, Devon Hains told,
“The photos were shot two days last week, Sunday, January 27 and Wednesday, January 30th. The photos feature both Surfer Dan and Allen Finau. They were shot at Presque Isle Park in Marquette Michigan on Lake Superior. The temperature for the Sunday shoot got down to -30 degrees Fahrenheit (-34°C) with the windchill.”
He continued saying,
“I’m not very experienced with surfing at all. I’ve only tried a few times with Surfer Dan. He’s the experienced surfer and also the feature of my photos. I mostly photograph Dan from a safe spot on shore.”
Further, in the interview, he stated that this time even the ‘safe spot’ wasn’t so safe. He mentioned that taking the photographs was no easy task for Devon this time. Also said,
“As the photographer, the most challenging part was being able to see through my viewfinder. The cold windchill caused my eyes to water a lot and it would freeze in my eyelashes. The cold air temperature meant I couldn’t exhale with my face raised to my camera because it would cause a layer of water vapor from my breath to freeze over my viewfinder and sometimes my lens.”
He added,
“I’ve photographed Dan surfing in both sub-zero temperatures and pretty intense waves. Each time I feel a little concerned but I’m confident he knows his limits and it shows when he gets out there.”
One of the Facebook posts from Devon Hains Photography captioned,
“The polar vortex made for some fun conditions to go chill in Lake Superior for my friends Surfer Dan and Allen Finau. I had a blast photographing these two in the sub-zero temps this past week. Daniel Schetter

In 2016, Schatter (a surfer) stated in one interview with the Free Press that he surfs three times a week and will surf in 15-degree weather. He said,
"I surf all year. There is no end of the season. When the ice freezes solid, a lot of times, there’s water out in the lake still that’s open to the wind, and the wind will create waves out there, and they’ll roll under the ice and hit the shore, and break the ice loose. Then the whole ice shelf will move out, and the waves will spit out from the ice."
No wonder the above photos are chilling. Isn’t it?
So, these funny memes and chilling pictures of surfer have surely given you the idea about how chilly was the temperature in the region.
