A whopping number of 6117 ‘Kuchipudi’ dance performers created a new Guinness World Record by putting up a spectacular show at the IGMC Stadium in Vijayawada on Sunday.
This “Maha Brinda Natyam” (grand group dance) saw the dancers from US, UK, India, Hong Kong, Russia, UAE and Mauritius performing “Jayamu Jayamu” item in unison. Guinness adjudicator Rishi Nath announced the record and awarded the certificate to Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu. The dancers came from all the age groups, they were as young as 5 years old and older than 60 years.
This grand group dance was organized as a part of the ‘5th International Kuchipudi Dance Convention’ by the officials of the south Indian state Andhra Pradesh from the Department of Language and Culture.
“Jayamu Jayamu” is considered one of the most distinguished items of ‘Kuchipudi’ dance choreographed by legendary dancer and guru Dr. Vempati Chinna Satyam. More than 2,500 ‘Kuchipudi’ performers had pulled off a quite similar dance performance in Hyderabad (an Indian city in then undivided Andhra Pradesh) in 2010.
This 13-minute long magnificent dance was selected for grand group dance for this year’s event. The Guinness has set a minimum requirement of 5 minutes to make an entry into the records.
The esteemed ‘Kuchipudi’ gurus such as Raja-Radha Reddy and Yamini Krishna Murthy, Union Information and Broadcasting Minister M Venkaiah Naidu, and several others graced the closing ceremony with their presence. There were Kuchipudi conferences and demo lectures for the budding artists two days of prior to the event.
Another distinctive Kuchipudi composition by Vempati China Satyam ‘Ananda Tandavam’ was performed by Madhavapeddi Murthy at the event.
