Agatha Sangma is an Indian politician, who is a Member of Parliament (MP) & a part of the 17th Lok Sabha since 2019. She represents the Tura constituency.  


Some Facts About Agatha Sangma 


  • Agatha Sangma was born in New Delhi and brought up in West Garo Hills, Meghalaya. 

  • Her full name is Agatha Kongkal Sangma. 

  • Her father, late P. A. Sangma, was the former speaker of the Lok Sabha & her brother, Conrad Sangma, is the Chief Minister of the state of Meghalaya. 

  • She is also a lawyer, a photographer, and an environmentalist.

  • In the 14th Lok Sabha, she was elected in May 2008 after her father gave up the seat to become a part of state politics.  

  • Representing the Tura constituency of Meghalaya as NCP or Nationalist Congress Party’s candidate in 2009, she was re-elected and became the youngest Minister of State (at the age of 29) in the UPA Second Manmohan Singh ministry (15th Lok Sabha).

  • She was appointed as the Minister of State for Rural Development in May 2009 but resigned in Oct 2012 during Cabinet reshuffle. 

  • She is a Member of Parliament (MP) of India and a part of the 17th Lok Sabha. 

  • In Nov 2017, it was reported that she would contest the 2018 Meghalaya state election as a National People's Party (NPP) candidate. Contesting from the South Tura constituency, she won the seat with 6,499 votes. However, she resigned as a member of the House, paving the way for her brother Conrad to contest the by-poll from her constituency, Tura.
