Owaisi was elected as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) in 1994 and 1999.

In 2004 he was elected to Lok Sabha for Hyderabad Constituency.

He again elected to Parliament for the second term from Hyderabad in 2009.

Having got 52.88% of votes

Asaduddin Owaisi became MP for the third consecutive term in the 2014 Lok Sabha Elections.

In the 2019 Lok Sabha Elections

he defeated BJP's Dr Bhagavanth Rao by 2.73 lakh votes from Hyderabad.

Some Facts About Asaduddin Owaisi


  • His father was also a politician from Hyderabad and won Lok Sabha seat from Hyderabad for six consecutive terms.

  • He also represented the South Zone inter-university U-25’s cricket team as fast bowler in the Vizzy Trophy in 1994 and got selected in South Zone University team.

  • In 2004, he was elected to the Lok Sabha for Hyderabad constituency.

  • In 2005, he and his brother were booked for charges related to manhandling the Medak district collector. 

  • A lawsuit was registered against him in 2009 on the order of Election Commission of India for chasing and beating up Syed Saleemuddin, a polling agent of TDP in the Moghalpura area.

  • He became MP for the third consecutive term in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, with 52.88% votes.

  • In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, he defeated Dr. Bhagavnath Rao by 2.73 lakh votes from Hyderabad.

Controversies


  • In April 2005, Asaduddin and his younger brother Akbaruddin were booked for manhandling and other charges in the Medak district when MIM protested against a mosque demolition for road widening. In Jan 2013, he was remanded to judicial custody for 14 days and was later moved to Sangareddy jail.

  • A case was filed against Owaisi on Election Commission of India’s order for chasing and hitting TDP (Telugu Desam Party) polling agent, Syed Saleemuddin, in the Moghalpura area in 2009. 

  • In March 2013, Owaisi was detained for organizing rally without seeking official permission and keeping an unlicensed gun in Bidar, Karnataka.

  • In Jun 2014, Owaisi gave a hate speech against India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi to seek the Muslim community's support for his party.

  • In Jan 2015, Owaisi said that every child in the world is born as a Muslim, and their parents and society convert them to other religions. He also said that Islam is the real home of all the religions. He garnered criticism for these remarks.

  • In Feb 2016, Owaisi surrendered before Hyderabad police and was offered bail for an assault, which he allegedly led, executed against Telangana Indian National Congress legislators. His close aide Syed Abdahu Kashaf and AIMIM Party’s Social Media Head assaulted Shabbir Ali, Congress MLC & leader of the opposition.

  • In Mar 2016, during a rally address in Maharashtra, Owaisi said that he would never utter the slogan ‘Bharat Mata Ki Jai,’ as a response to RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat's comment that the new generation needs to be taught to chant slogans by hailing Mother India while referring to 2016 JNU sedition controversy. Owaisi said, “Whom is he(Bhagwat) trying to frighten? He can’t force his ideology on others. Nowhere in the Constitution it says that one should say: 'Bharat Mata ki Jai'." And later, he made it clear that he has no issues with the slogan but with RSS forcing to chant the slogan as a test of patriotism. 


  • On Ayodhya verdict delivered by Supreme Court in November 2019, Owaisi said that he is not satisfied by the ruling and added that SC is “indeed supreme but not infallible.”
