Some Facts About Atishi Marlena Since childhood days, she was interested in social work and participated in several social campaigns and initiatives. An Indian politician from Aam Aadmi Party, she was the topper of Delhi University when she graduated in history in 2001. She earned Chevening and Rhodes scholarships in 2003 and 2005, respectively, from the University of Oxford. She taught History and English for a brief time at Rishi Valley School in Andhra Pradesh. In 2006, she moved to a small village near Bhopal in Madhya Pradesh, where she got involved in organic farming and progressive education systems. There, she met several party members of the AAP like Manish Sisodia, Prashant Bhushan, and others, and soon, her journey with the party began. In Jan 2013, she got involved in policy formulation for AAP. She is a member of the party's apex executive body, the Political Affairs Committee. Also, in 2013, she was appointed as the party’s Spokesperson and has been the party representative on TV debates ever since. In 2015, she was closely involved with the Jal Satyagraha in Khandwa district of MP and offered crucial support to Alok Agarwal, AAP leader & activist spearheading the campaign during the historic protests and the ensuing legal battle. During 2011, she observed the Indian Anti-Corruption movement by Anna Hazare as an outsider and later said that single-issue campaigns are not much effective. She also spearheaded the flagship Mohalla Sabha Project for the Government of NCT of Delhi. However, the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi rejected the project in 2016. As an AAP party candidate, she contested from East Delhi constituency for the Lok Sabha elections 2019. She lost to former cricketer Gautam Gambhir, who was BJP’s candidate. Controversies In April 2018, the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi & Union Ministry of Home Affairs removed Atishi from the post of Advisor to the CM of Delhi, primarily on education. That is because there was no such official post. When she dropped her surname ‘Marlena’ around the Lok Sabha elections to not sound a ‘Christian,’ a big controversy sparked for Atishi resorting to religious appeasement.
